Building the socio-economic capacity of marine environmental organisations

The Marine Socio-Economics Project (MSEP) is a project funded by the Tubney Charitable Trust and coordinated by NEF in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, The Wildlife Trusts and Worldwide Fund for Nature. The project aims to build socio-economic capacity and cooperation between NGOs and aid their engagement with all sectors using the marine environment.

In order to enhance the delivery of biodiversity conservation objectives within the marine environment the use of socio-economic evidence is of pivotal importance. Biological data alone will not guarantee the management and conservation of these public resources. The long-term goal of the project is to achieve and maintain healthy seas around the UK which are used sustainably and for the maximum benefit to society. This recognizes the need to return the seas to a state of health from their current degraded situation but it also recognizes that there are benefits to society from utilizing marine resources (food and raw materials to name just two). If those benefits are to be available to future generations then that use must be sustainable and the economic thinking behind decision-making needs to reflect that long-term sustainability.

Timeline: The project started in September 2011. The inception phase was completed in March 2012 and involved consulting with the NGOs on their needs and capacity to identify the best ways to deliver the goals of the project. Since early 2012 then the project has included a number of workshop and outputs which are available from this site.

All training events and materials to improve the use and understanding of socio-economic arguments were developed in partnership with the marine NGOpartners and are available from this site.

A Marine Socio-Economics Network (MSEN) bringing together NGO staff with key interests in socio-economics was set up in 2012.
